Excellent synopsis of the mess we got ourselves in and still have not found a way out! The Lorax is my favorite D. Suess book. "I am the Lorax, I speak for the trees!!!"

UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot,

Nothing is going to get better. It's not.

I remember all that though perhaps being one of the last to experience it. I remember the petri dish mercury and mercury thermometers to take our temperatures when sick, one of which fell and shattered to the ground, and we had to "clean" it up. Mercury had a good hand besides DDT and other organochlorines in the demise of the mid-century worldwide Osprey population, being concentrated in fish (great now that this denizen of conservation is recovered). And the DDT and asbestos. I remember the debate on what to do with the nuclear waste. Not sure that was resolved. I was four and living in Cleveland when the Cuyahoga River caught on fire. Now development and habitat destruction is the chief threat to birds and all nature, coupled with their concomitant global warming, collisions, cats, etc., so I don't think things were improved, and chemically they were, though residues of all these remain, but replaced.
