I was in K'auai and was woken up by those roosters every morning.(feral). We were told they were lose after a tsunami many yrs ago. The population is enormous.. We saw them everywhere. I used to listen to For the Birds daily in Wi for yrs. Love your work and passion.
Thanks! The truly wild descendants of the junglefowl brought by the Polynesians have long been hard to distinguish from feral farm chickens brought later by Europeans and Americans. There weren't many escapees on Kauai, though, especially at high elevations, until some storms damaged a bunch of chicken enclosures, releasing them to mix with the wild ones. Now it's very hard even on that one island to be sure about the heritage of the chickens.
