My husband and I were watching Trumpeter Swans the other day on a nearly frozen lake. He joked we should make them little down jackets - I pointed out that they already had them!
That is amazing the amount of extra down feathers our northern birds produce to keep warm! It was an interesting winter when I bought live mealy worms for my chickadees...to keep the ones I wasn't feeding alive I put them in the frig in containers of oatmeal and rings of carrots for them to feed on...I was delighted to see they left the outer ring! I'd like to do it again but seems like the smallest amount is a couple hundred...
I love the picture of the Pileated WP all curled up. You're motivating me to get outside at 6 am to fill my feeder! I heard several chickadees calling when I got out there late (7:15) this morning. They were probably cursing me in Chickadee speak.
